Merrillville Looking at Historic District

The town of Merrillville is working toward setting up a historic preservation commission... with the initial historic district along 73rd Avenue, from Broadway to Madison Street. Along that stretch sits the Merrillville-Ross Township Historical Museum, a circa 1860s building that used to be a school. The Times today says the town council is expected to vote tomorrow (Tue 022613) on first reading of an ordinance to create the commission.

Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana recognized Rebecca Jackson-Sanchez of Hammond and her family, hosting a mortgage burning ceremony Sunday. Michigan Fighting Bottle Deposit Scammers

It was created to get people to recycle, but ABC reports one state's can and bottle return policy may be working a little too well. ABC's Daria Albinger reports a lot of people cross the Michigan state line to cash in. However, Michigan State Representative Kenneth Kurtz has introduced a bill to crack down on scammers. It'd make any attempt to redeem the deposit on non-returnable containers punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a one-thousand dollar fine.

Hobart Police Say Missing Woman Found

In Hobart, police say a 78-year-old woman who has Alzheimers who was missing last night has been found. Police sent out an alert that authorities were looking for the woman after she was last seen near the west side of Westfield Southlake Sunday afternoon. 15 Children, 2 Adults Seen at Hospital After Crash

Indiana University Health Starke Hospital reports seeing 15 children and 2 adults this morning after an accident involving a Marshall-Starke Head Start bus in downtown Knox. Hospital officials say some of the children were treated for minor bumps and bruises in the emergency room, and all 15 have been released to their parents. The adults were still being looked at. Three Children Hurt in Two-Vehicle Crash

Three children were injured, and one on them was reportedly airlifted to a Chicago-area hospital, in a crash on Wicker Avenue in St. John Sunday afternoon. The Times today says shortly after 12:30 one vehicle apparently crossed the center lane for unknown reasons, and collided with another.

Talk Continues on MC Rail Realignment

In Michigan City, talk continues on realigning the South Shore rail that, for over a century, has run on a two-mile segment of single track embedded in the middle of 10th and 11th Streets. Injuries, Arrests at Chicago Mall Melee

Police continue to investigate what was described as a mob disturbance that erupted at the Ford City Mall in Chicago Saturday. It started after an autograph session by the rap group Mindless Behavior and ended with victims being sent to the hospital. Lake Village Man Sentenced for Distribution of Child Porn

32 year old Lake Village man was sentenced to seven-years in prison and 15 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to felony distribution of child pornography in Hammond Federal Court this week. Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris, who recently released the county's 2012 Coroner's Statistics, says drug-related deaths continue rise. Harris says in Porter County poly-substance abuse is a major problem, with Porter County averaging a little over one drug-related death a week.
