Lake County May Get Veterans Court

There's a measure on its way to the Indiana Senate that would create a special veterans court in Lake County. House Bill 10-16 establishes a pilot project in Lake County allowing the county council to put funds from the county drug free community fund toward the cost of what's described as a “problem solving court program” that may provide rehabilitative services.

Work Coming Soon on New Valpo Roundabout

The wheels are in motion to open bids in a couple months for Valparaiso's next, and perhaps most high-profile roundabout. City officials say construction on the five-points roundabout, which would be on north Calumet Avenue, where it meets up with Vale Park and Roosevelt Roads, might then be able to start this spring.

Most Morning South Shore Trains Temp. Suspended

Most South Shore trains have been temporarily suspended due to a derailment in Michigan City. There are no injuries but service is affected. We expect this disruption to affect nearly all of the morning rush hour. Trains 110 and 112 will depart East Chicago at the scheduled time making all stops. Limited seating will be available. Metra Electric will honor South Shore tickets. We will update this message when new information is available.

Bill Would Change NICTD Bd Membership

A Lake County state lawmaker has introduced legislation that would bump up Lake County membership on the South Shore governing board from two members to five. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service say ice accumulations of up to a couple tenths of an inch are possible. Freezing Rain Advisory for the Region

Look out for hazardous driving conditions around the Region for Sunday. We could see freezing rain, possibly mixed with a short period of sleet, with temperatures just above the freezing mark. Today's Times reports an unrelated investigation has lead to two 19 year old men each being charged with felony child molestation. Published reports say Joel Bogdan, of Portage, and Charles Nafus the third, of Lake Station, are alleged to have had sexual relation with a 13 year old girl, after she notified Hobart Police of the sexual encounters. A 19 year old Indianapolis man is expected to face numerous charges after leading police on a high speed chase on I-65 in excess of 110 miles per hour. A 44 year old Fegely Middle School teacher is being held at last check in the Porter County Jail with no bond after being taken into custody for misconduct involving two female juveniles. In Gary, police say a 19-year-old carjacking suspect was shot by the vehicle's owner Thursday afternoon while allegedly trying to steal the car near 37th and Connecticut Street.
