Full Day Funding for Kindergarten Increases

State school officials today announced state funding for full day kindergarten increased by $107-point-9 million for the 2012-2013 school year, reaching a total of $189.8 million. The funds will be distributed next week [ December 14 ] to 338 public school corporations and charter schools for more than 79-thousand students who enrolled in full day kindergarten programs this year.

Woman's ID Still Unknown from Griffith Apt Fire

The identity of a woman who died in a fire Friday at an apartment complex in Griffith remains unknown at last check. The Times reports officials are waiting on notification of next of kin for the woman, who was killed in a fire at an apartment building located on the 600th block of North Elmer Street. Liquor Store Robbery in Portage

Police in Portage are investigating the report of a strong-arm robbery in the 54-hundred block of Central Avenue Saturday night. Authorities say a man entered South Shore Liquors and allegedly took money out of a container used for charity donations, then removed money from the cash register. A Porter County officer and K-9 tried to track the suspect, but police say the scent was lost on the north side of Central Avenue between Dombey Road and Hickory Street.

News Release: LAKE COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces westbound lane restrictions of I-80/94 between the State Road 53 exit (Broadway) and the Illinois state line beginning at midnight tonight, Tuesday, December 11th through 6 a.m. Crews will be patching potholes in the westbound right lane and connecting ramps. Gary Man Struck and Killed by Train

Authorities are investigating the death of a 29-year-old Gary man struck and killed by a train Saturday afternoon in the 900 block of Wallace Street. The Lake County Coroners office says the man suffered blunt force trauma, but manner of death was listed as pending. Coroners officials say the man was pronounced dead shortly before 4pm.
