High Court Sides With Seed Giant

The US Supreme Court has sided with Monsanto in a seed patent case involving an Indiana farmer. In a unanimous ruling, justices said farmers cannot plant the company's genetically-altered and herbicide-resistant Roundup Ready soybeans without paying the company to do so – including later generations of the seed. 75-year-old Farmer Vernon Hugh Bowman contended he was not violating Monsanto's patent by planting seeds that were produced by seeds he had purchased from a grain elevator, knowing that those would likely be Roundup-resistant as well.
The high court said Bowman is free to buy grain elevator beans to eat or feed to livestock or resell, but he could not plant the beans, and harvest them again and again without paying the agri-giant for use of its patented product. Bowman contended the soybeans replicated themselves, but the court said 'blaming the bean' was no defense.

Two Hurt in La Porte Co Crash

A single-vehicle crash on I-94 in La Porte County Sunday afternoon sent two women to the hospital with injuries. Indiana State Police say a preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 2 pm a westbound car one mile west of the LaPorte exit was in the middle lane when an SUV made an abrupt lane change from the right lane to the middle lane causing the first driver to swerve and lose control, striking the concrete wall twice before going across all lanes of traffic. Troopers say two women, age 57 and 61 from Lake County, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and police say having their seatbelts on, along with the airbags deploying, greatly reduced the severity of injuries. Police say the SUV continued west bound without stopping.
