In Merrillville, Indiana State Police at the Lowell Post say a 52-year-old semi driver allegedly fell asleep while driving on I-65 Sunday afternoon, went off the roadway, hit an informational sign, went down an embankment and through a fence before before coming to rest in a field before awakening. Troopers say a preliminary investigation revealed the driver was southbound about a mile north of the US 30 exit pulling a box trailer loaded with 17-thousand pounds of empty tin cans. No load was lost. A news release from Indiana State Police said the driver allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol the night before, and was found to have a blood alcohol content of .09%. He was treated at the scene for minor cuts, and cited for Operating While Intoxicated, Driving Fatigued, and Possession of Alcohol Beverages in a Commercial Motor Vehicle.
