Committee Approves 'Merry Christmas Bill'

The “Merry Christmas” bill proposed by an Indiana state lawmaker is headed to the full Senate. Charlestown Republican Jim Smith says Christmas is under attack "in a way that no other cultural traditions are," and his measure is meant to protect public schools and teachers from being sued over Christmas activities. Language in Senate Bill 326 would allow the display of “scenes or symbols associated with traditional winter celebrations, including a Menorah, Christmas tree, Nativity scene” as long as teachers recognize at least one other holiday celebration. The measure also specifically states it would “allow students and employees to offer traditional greetings” like “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Hanukkah,” and “Happy Holidays.”
