Typically, that credit, debit or charge card you just swiped to make a purchase contains its user data on a magnetic strip. Most of the rest of the world uses a memory chip embedded on the card that's supposed to be more secure than the 1970's-era strip technology. Now American industry is adopting the chip, as well. Some big retailers rushing to install chip-reading equipment to prevent another Target-style breach.
