Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out in a rail car auto hauler in the Hegewisch neighborhood just after 7 p.m. last night. Published reports say fire fighters had trouble putting out the fire near 136th and Brainard because the rail car was alongside electrified tracks. As a result railroad officials had to turn off the power to those tracks so fire fighters could safely approach the fire.
No injuries were reported however an email notification by the Northern Indiana Transportation District reported that due to fire equipment and police activity near the Hegewisch Station, a westbound and eastbound train were held at the East Chicago station a while last night.
