Unsafe Lane Movement Causes Multiple Crash on I-65

Truck crash
Indiana State Police say the driver of a semi received serious injuries when his semi crashed into three other semis causing Interstate 65 in Newton County to close down for four hours  Tuesday.
A preliminary reports say shows shortly after 9 a.m. a Freightliner at the back of the line was slowing for a previous crash when a Volvo truck pulling a trailer loaded with salt, failed to to see the slowing traffic before it was too late.  The Volvo over corrected and started to jack knife striking the rear of the Freightliner's trailer.  The Volvo's trailer then crushed its truck cab between the trailers pinning the driver inside.
Police say the force of the collision shoved the Freightliner's trailer into a second semi which pushed that rig into a third semi.
The driver of the Volvo was the only one injured and had to be extricated and transported to St. Anthony's in Crown Point, with possible life-threatening injuries.  His name is being withheld pending notification of family.
Reports say the other driver's refused treatment at the scene and seatbelts were used by all drivers.
Lowell Fire Department, Lincoln Township Fire Department, Newton County EMS, Village Motors and Cheever's assisted at the scene.
No citations have been issued at this time.
