Both directions of the Borman (I-80/94) are backing up due to apparent potholes and/or, expansion gaps opening up on both sides of the expressway in the Gary corridor.
A number of traffic tipsters reported openings in the pavement eastbound 80/94 mainly affecting the right lanes before Calumet Ave., Kennedy Ave. and the Cline Ave. bridge.
Traffic tipsters are also reporting a major gap of at least one foot in an expansion gap across all lanes of eastbound 80/94 just before the Cline Ave. Bridge. The opening is slowing traffic to a crawl as cars and semis both cautiously cross over the gap . A smaller expansion gap is also reportedly affecting only the center lane near Calumet Ave.
Although we have not received any reports of openiings on the westbound side of th Borman, traffic is also backing up in a simular fashion from about I-65 to just past Cline Ave. All eastbound lanes were backing up from the Bishop Ford to a little past Cline Ave.
As of 5:30 p.m. INDOT informed Region News Team Traffic that Pothole patching highway crews were assembled and were on their way to close up the gaps.
Drivers are urged to be alert to slowing traffic and in some cases stopped traffic as vehicles come across the expansion gaps.
