Emergency Repairs Completed on the Borman

The effects of the Wednesday's snowfall and the return arctic temperatures apparently combined to create a commuting nightmare on both directions of the Borman Thursday afternoon.
Shortly after 4 p.m. afternoon rush got ugly as all eastbound lanes on 80/94 were backing up from the state line to Cline Ave. Soon reports of supposed potholes opening up came into the Region News Team Traffic Hotline.  But they weren't potholes, they were expansion joints that are made to do just that--expand during weather fluctuations.  In some areas the expansion joints span across all the travel lanes and apparently melted snow trapped underneath and colder temperatures over-expanded some of the joints--with the joint near Cline Avene reportedly opening a full foot!

Traffic approaching these expanded openings had to drop their speeds to a crawl to cross, going slow enough to not cuase a blowout or other damage.  That effect multiplied by litterally hundreds of thousands of vehicles having to do the same thing backed up traffic all the way to the Bishop Ford.
INDOT, monitoring our Region News Team traffic Reports immediately assembled a repair crew by 5 p.m. and began fixing the gaps minutes later.
Fixing the gaps requires what's called a full lane rolling closure causing all traffic lanes to come to a stop until the crews went on to the next repair site.  But INDOT completed both eastbound and westbound repairs by 7 p.m.  An amazing timeframe in anybody's book.
