Flood Warnings continue for the Kankakee River at two separate locations in northwest Indiana. The National Weather Service reports minor flooding is occurring on the Kankakee River at Shelby. Flood stage for the river there is nine-feet and as of 10:45am this morning, the flood stage was nine-point-four-feet. The river there will continue to rise to near ten-feet by Monday morning and then begin to fall. Meanwhile ice jams remain possible, but very localized.
Minor flooding is also anticipated this afternoon on the Kankakee River at Davis Route 30. Officials report the river there is expected to rise above flood stage, which is ten-feet and crest near ten-point-five feet Saturday evening and fall back below flood stage by noon on Monday.
INDOT says if you come across a flooded roadway to turn around and never drive through standing water. According to the National Weather Service, most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Six-inches of standing water is enough to stall a car and a foot of water will float many vehicles.
