Shortly after 5 am today (Thursday Feb 27), the Portage Fire Department says crews were dispatched to a large fire in an oil pit at the Feralloy Corporation at 600 George Nelson Drive in the Port of Indiana. Portage Fire Division Chief Chad Bogue says upon arrival there was a lot of smoke coming from the large steel processing warehouse. Upon investigation, responders found an oil pit had started on fire underneath a rolling machine in the middle of the warehouse. Bogue says maintenance workers advised they were making repairs to the machine and were using a welding machine when the fire started. Crews used about twenty gallons of foam and one-thousand gallons water to extinguish the fire, and Bogue says damage was contained to the oil pit and rolling machine directly above the pit. Crews were on scene for about two hours. A first alarm was struck to cover city fire stations, and Burns Harbor assisted on scene. Bogue says they had to advance about four-hundred feet of hose to raech the fire. He also says it was bitterly cold this morning, especially out at the lakefront, with a strong wind coming directly off Lake Michigan. There were no injuries reported, and no problems with equipment freezing.
