Members of the Indiana House have given the go-ahead to a measure that could bring a South Shore expansion closer to reality. Senate Bill 367 closes a tax loophole and directs the four-million dollars in savings to the Northwest Indiana RDA to put toward mass transit in Lake County. It's already been earmarked for extending the commuter line south to Dyer. Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr has called on regional planners to oppose the bill, saying those particular dollars, derived from casinos in Hammond, Gary and East Chicago for economic development, should go back to the cities and county to decide how to spend them. The measure now heads to a House-Senate conference committee.
