A veterinarian and native of Lake County is the star of a new reality series on the National Geographic Channel. Dr. Michelle Oakley, a 1987 graduate of Munster High School, earned her undergraduate degree in zoology at the University of Michigan. While studying there, she took her first trip to the Yukon as a field assistant on an arctic ground squirrel ecology study. It was during that first trip that she met her future husband, local fire fighter Shane Oakley, who kept referring to her as "Squirrel Girl." She's now the only all-species veterinarian for hundreds of square miles where she makes house calls in the Yukon territory of Northern Canada. She also runs an animal clinic out of their home and runs weekly clinical sessions 148 miles away in Haines, Alaska, and 96 miles away in Whitehorse, Yukon. The series premiere for, "Dr Oakley: Yukon Vet," is April 12th, but there's a special series sneak peak (Sat Mar 22) "Yukon Vet: Meet Dr. Oakley" tonight on the National Geographic Channel.
