Highway Lighting Wire Theft Still a Problem

Copper thieves are to blame for some lights out along the Borman Expressway, according to an official with the Indiana Department of Transportation. At a recent NIRPC meeting, Portage Mayor James Snyder asked why some lights were dark along the interstate. It's a problem that's been especially bad along the I-80/94 and I-65 corridors in northwest Indiana, according to INDOT who along with Indiana State Police in December announced an intensive effort to fight the problem. Over the last two years, officials say wire theft from hundreds of light poles on Indiana highways has cost Indiana taxpayers more than 300-thousand dollars in repair and replacement costs.
