The Lake County Sheriffs Office says more than two-point-eight-million dollars in stolen train cargo – including cars and motorcycles, firearms, currency and pharmaceuticals -- has been recovered. Officials from CSX Railroad and the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) assisted in the eight-month undercover investigation, which pinpointed major thefts from railyards in the Miller area of Gary as well as Western Avenue and Bedford Park in the Chicago area. "It's amazing how fast they can get into a freight car and steal the merchandise, primarily at night, even sometimes during daylight hours," said Lake County Sheriff John Buncich.

NICB Senior Vice President Jim Schweitzer says these kinds of thefts eventually hurt consumers. "When you go to get your insurance, your automobile insurance, your homeowners insurance, whatever insurance you happen to be buying, even commercial," Schweitzer said, "the impact of theft, vehicle theft, property theft, is felt by the individuals." Police say they have currently have nineteen suspects, with seven of the individuals, from Gary, Hammond and Merrillville, in custody. [Photos/Karl Berner]
