A 34 year old Hazel Crest, Illinois man is in custody in Porter County for trying to purchase a vehicle using someone else's identity. Indiana State Police Lowell Post reports a dealership in Fort Wayne contacted authorities on March 14th about an alleged identity deception after a sales lead had been filled out online by a person claiming to be from LaGrange, Illinois, to get financing on a used 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, valued at just under 67-thousand dollars.
State Police say a check of the person's credit card later revealed the person attempting to buy the Jeep was not who he claimed to be. The suspect, Carl Wright, was arrested in Valparaiso on Friday afternoon after signing paperwork and financial information using a false identity for the vehicle, which was transported in from Fort Wayne because Wright had not been willing to travel farther than northwest Indiana. A 19 year old Chicago man, who drove Wright to Valparaiso, was also arrested for possession of marijuana.
