Crown Point Pledges Toward S Shore Expansion

It's official – add Crown Point to the list of Lake County municipalities agreeing to pledge a portion of their new county income tax dollars toward extending the South Shore line. The city will earmark ten-percent toward extending the commuter line eight miles south, but some council members voted against it, saying the amount was too high. Earlier this week, Lowell narrowly approved committing 15-percent. There's been discussion of sometime in the future possibly taking the commuter rail as far south as Lowell, and out east to Valparaiso, but currently the plan is to expand the service eight miles south from Hammond to Dyer.
About a dozen other Lake County communities, along with the county, have pledged a percentage of their dollars from a new income tax toward the estimated 571-million dollar project. Dyer just recently approved a resolution earmarking five-percent. Indiana Congressman Pete Visclosky, who has been asking town and city councils in Lake County over the past several weeks, to allocate funds to the proposed and long-talked about extension, recently announced there is enough support to continue moving forward. Construction could begin in about six years, with the first trains running along the new route in 2023.
