The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor welcomed the first two ocean ships of 2014 season today signifying the start of the international shipping season. Both ships carried steel from Holland which is destined for Midwest manufactures. The captain of the first ship was presented this afternoon with “The Steel Stein” which symbolizes Northwest Indiana's enduring role as the steel capital of North America.
In 2013,the Port of Indiana handled two-point-five million tons of cargo, the highest annual tonnage since 2006 and second highest since 1998, with shipments up 17-percent from 2012.
