In Cedar Lake, the Town Council is waiting until May to have their say on financing for the proposed South Shore expansion. The council decided to postpone the vote because Councilman Robert Carnahan was unable to attend the council's most recent meeting this past Tuesday. Indiana Congressman Pete Visclosky is asking every city and town in Lake County to commit a percentage of their revenues from a new local county income tax toward extending the commuter rail line eight miles south along the western edge of the county, from Hammond to Dyer. Many municipalities have already done so, including just recently Lowell and Crown Point. Congressman Visclosky recently announced there is enough support to continue moving forward. Construction could begin in about six years, with the first trains running along the new route in 2023.
