The public is invited to hear a presentation this evening at IU Northwest on readiness for community crises. The presentation will be led by Shari Veil, the Director of Risk Sciences Division at the University of Kentucky, which begins at 6pm., in Raintree Hall (room 102), as a part of the IU Northwest Department of Communication’s Annual Communication Week.
Veil oversees the recruitment, advisement and retention of more than 400 communication majors and coordinates research, funding, education, and training programs specific to risk and crisis communication. Her research interests include organizational learning in high-risk environments, community preparedness, and communication strategies for crisis management. She teaches courses in risk and crisis, organizational, and mass communication.
Veil’s work has been funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Department of Homeland Security’s National Center for Food Protection and Defense and National Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events.
A crisis panel of local experts will follow Veil’s presentation. Panelists include Steve Walsh, reporter, Lakeshore Public media; Karen Freeman-Wilson, Mayor, City of Gary; and Patricia Nowak, Chief, IU Police Department- Northwest.
