Controversial FDA Remark on Aspirin and Heart Attacks

If you've already had a heart attack, it's likely your doctor will tell you to take a low dose of aspirin every day to prevent another one. But if you've never had a heart attack? The FDA says taking aspirin may not be worth the risk. ABC News reports after years of hearing aspirin can prevent heart attacks, Americans are now being told by the FDA that in some cases the risk outweighs the benefit. ABC News Senior Health and Medical Editor Doctor Richard Besser says the agency is contradicting other groups - with a new statement saying it doesn't support taking daily aspirin if you haven't already had a heart attack or stroke. The American Heart Association and the government's own panel - the preventative services task force says if you're at high risk for heart disease, you should take an aspirin to prevent your first heart attack.  Dr. Besser says talk to YOUR doctor.
