Tight Race for Local Vacant House Seat

One closely watched race, where ballots were cast in Lake and Porter Counties, didn't include an incumbent, and that was for parties to choose their nominee for 11th District State Representative. The apparent victories went to Republican Michael Aylesworth of Hebron, former Porter County Councilman and Commissioner, over Michael Mears of Lowell, police chief in Lynwood, and in an even tighter race on the Democratic ticket, James Metro of Cedar Lake, a member of the Lake County Plan Commission and longtime Cedar Lake Democratic party chair over three-term Lowell Town Councilman Philip Kuiper. They'll be running this Fall to replace incumbent State Representative, Republican Rick Niemeyer (nee-meyer) of Lowell, who is running instead for 6th District Indiana State Senate this year.
Niemeyer garnered enough votes, according to unofficial tallies, from voters in Lake, Newton and Benton Counties to defeat Chris Shepherd, a St. John attorney, in the Republican primary, and will apparently face Democrat and former Newton County Commissioner Roxanna Hanford, who beat Lon Childress of Lowell on Tuesday. The district has been represented by Republican Sue Landske of Cedar Lake for thirty years. In November, Landske announced she had been diagnosed with lung cancer, and later said she would not be seeking re-election. Landske joined the State Senate in 1984, taking over the 6th District seat held by Rick Niemeyer's father, Ernie Niemeyer, after Ernie Niemeyer became a Lake County Commissioner.
