Smartwater CSI has arrived in the Midwest, here in the Region. From across the pond, the Porter County Sheriffs Department is only the second in the US, after Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to be part of this initiative developed in the UK that fights crime with water. Sheriff Dave Lain says “Smartwater CSI” not only deters criminals, but is highly effective in identifying and recovering missing valuables. The special liquid solution is applied to personal items, like jewelry, that, if stolen, can be traced back to their owner through the use of a U-V, ultraviolet, light. It's even been used to spray thieves themselves so they can be identified. . Each kit contains a unique combination of rare earth minerals that provide a unique forensic signature. This summer, free Smartwater kits will be distributed to Porter County seniors through the Sheriff's Department TRIAD network.
