The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Beach Hazards Statement. Dangerous swimming conditions are expected along the Lake Michigan shoreline in northwest Indiana, with strong rip currents, strong structural currents and high waves. Rip currents are described as powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, most often occurring at low spots or breaks in sandbars, and structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure. Officials warn both rip currents and structural currents can sweep you into deeper water.
