NIPSCO repair crews are reportedly on the scene of a gas leak in downtown La Porte. Northern Indiana Public Service Company spokesperson Kathleen Szot told the Region News Team that at around 3:15 pm CDT, a contractor working on a city parking lot by City Hall struck a four-inch steel gas line. Szot says, "as a safety precaution some apartments, businesses and the La Porte YMCA were evacuated along Michigan and Jefferson Streets". It has not been disclosed if any injuries have been reported. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area of Lincolnway to Harrison and Indiana Ave. to Monroe in downtown La Porte, while utility crews continue to work on the gas leak. The utility spokesperson says repairs, "are on-going at this time...we're working as quickly and safely as possible to get those (repairs) completed."
Zsot also says, "for any listeners in the area that might be impacted by the evacuation, there has been a shelter opened up at Lincoln Elementary School for anyone displaced by this gas leak."
