Many Major New Laws Taking Effect in Indiana

Several new state laws take effect today (July 1st) in Indiana. Some high-profile pieces of legislation on that list include...
  • House Bill 1006, described by its author as the largest comprehensive criminal justice reform in Indiana since the 1970s. The measure overhauls the state's criminal code and sentencing rules in part to make sentences better fit the crime.
  • An expansion of Indiana's Lifeline Law, which granted immunity to intoxicated minors who call 911 for someone in an alcohol-related emergency. The statute has been broadened to also include drug overdoses, sexual assaults, and other crimes.
  • A measure requiring concussion-awareness training for high school and youth football coaches, and a 24-hour waiting period for players showing signs of concussion.
  • A new law allowing individuals who legally possess a gun to have it inside a motor vehicle parked in a school parking lot, so long as the firearm is locked in the vehicle and out of plain sight.
