The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) says most of the overnight work that had about a ten-mile stretch of US 30 closed between Merrillville and Schererville was able to be completed sooner than anticipated. INDOT Wednesday announced U.S. 30 between I-65 and U.S. 41 would close so INDOT could replace traffic signals and NIPSCO could repair downed power lines from Monday night's severe weather. INDOT says NIPSCO’s repair of damaged power lines from the severe weather was completed much earlier than expected and did not adversely affect the power grid INDOT traffic signals are on, which was also expected. The result is, all of U.S. 30 is open to traffic at this time, except the intersection of U.S. 30 and Taft/State Road 55, which is closed to all traffic and may remain closed throughout the early morning hours while INDOT crews replace the signal head. The signal at that intersection came down and was on westbound lanes of US 30 Tuesday morning. [Photo provided/INDOT]
