Investigators from the State Fire Marshall's office are trying to determine the cause of a fire that took the life of a Union Township woman, Wednesday afternoon. Sgt. Larry LaFlower, of the Porter County Sheriff's Department says the woman identified as 37-year-old Almeda Morales died of burns received when a fire reportedly broke out in the bedroom of her two-story residence in the 400 block of Pickwick Place in the Shorewood Forest subdivision. Sgt. LaFlower says her brother, who was at home when the fire started, escaped without any injuries. Union Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire shortly before noon today and contained the fire to the bedroom. Tim Beach, Assistant Fire Chief says Morales received burns to more than 50% of her body and was airlifted to University Hospital in Chicago.
