Investigators this morning are trying to figure out why a driver of an SUV drove into the path of a South Shore Train in South Bend, Sunday night. Police say the vehicle was southbound at a crossing located at Pine Rd. and Ardmore Trail when he was hit by an east bound train around 7pm which left Millennium Station in Chicago at 4:43 pm bound for the South Bend airport. According to reports, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the 204 passengers on board the train received injuries and the train halted about 100 yards from the crossing so crews could inspect the cars for damage, according to http://www.southbendtribune.com. The train was found to be safe and allowed to continue on at least an hour later. Police also say it appears all crossing arms and red light warning signals were working at the time of the accident. Saturday and Sunday, NICTD added extra passenger trains to accommodate fans going to the Notre Dame game in Chicago.
