On Monday, February 18, approximately 100 second to sixth grade girls from the Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana Girl Scouts will be introduced to opportunities in engineering in a fun and engaging way by NIPSCO female engineers during National Engineers Week – under this year’s theme “Introduce a Girl to Engineering.”
The event is hosted by NIPSCO and being organized by NiSource Inc.’s Developing and Advancing Women at NiSource (DAWN) women’s affinity group.
The three-hour event – which will include girls from local troops’ Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Team and the Lego Robotics Team – is part of DAWN’s efforts to help build the next generation of female leaders, support its local communities and provide opportunities for local students.
Activities from the day will include:
· Tour of NIPSCO’s electric and natural gas dispatching centers
· Hands-on demonstration on electric generation
· Interactive display of damaged and repaired utility poles
· Fun engineering skills challenge with NIPSCO engineers
The mission of DAWN is to live the values of inclusion and diversity by communicating and exchanging information that enlightens and empowers women both professionally and personally; and to create a NiSource environment that attracts, retains and promotes women. The goals of DAWN are to recruit, retain and accelerate the development of women at NiSource; participate in community service efforts that impact its customers and communities; serve as a collaborative voice around shared issues and concerns; and broaden understanding and awareness of inclusion, diversity and cultural competence.
