The latest statistics from the Indiana department of health show six human cases of West Nile virus in northwest Indiana, three in lake, two in porter, one in LaPorte county, with fifty statewide. Across the US, federal officials say this has been the most active year for West Nile virus since 2003 with cases in 48 states and 134 deaths reported. Center for Disease Control spokesman Curtis Allen says there have been more than 3,000 cases of the virus in the U.S. during 2012 and it has been year since numbers were close to that high. -Since 1999 when the virus was first recognized in New York City.- Allen adds it is rare to see the mosquito spread virus so late in the year. He says the CDC will be looking at a several factors including weather to try and determine why they are seeing the disease this late in the year.
