The outcome of a Cedar Lake man who was working in a deep trench when it suddenly fell in on him, Tuesday morning could have been a lot different. Cedar Lake Fire Chief Todd Wilkening says the victim is lucky to be alive as trench collapses are often fatal. The Times online is reporting that the 51-year-old man was working in a 7-foot-deep trench for a sewer line when the earth started to fill in on him near the 133rd and Parrish Avenue. Reports say a structure at the site to support trenches wasn't being used. Police and fire officials were called out to the scene about 9:15 am where they found the worked buried up to his chest. The worker was quickly rescued from the trench and taken to an area hospital. The fire chief says the worker could have suffered more significant injuries had the rescue taken longer.
