Authorities Offer Tips During Inclement Weather

Road conditions in southern Indiana today have become quite hazardous due to the first major storm of 2012, and have caused numerous multiple vehicle crashes, including a couple on I-65 near Lafayette. Indiana State Police are offering you some tips on what to do, and what not to do, in the event weather becomes an issue.

• Do not call city, county or state police to check on road conditions – police agencies across the state want to keep phone lines open for emergency phone calls
• For up-to-date weather information the best source is your favorite TV or radio station or check the National Weather Service at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ind/
• Visit www.TrafficWise.IN.gov or dial toll-free 1-800-261-ROAD (7623) for updated Indiana travel information, including road conditions, road closures, construction information, crashes and other traffic alerts
• A fully charged and functioning cell phone is your best friend when traveling
• Vehicles left abandoned along interstate and state road right-of-ways are subject to immediate removal over the course of inclement weather events
• Avoid travel that is not absolutely necessary so road crews may work more efficiently to clear major roads
• If you must travel, leave early, reduce speed and increase the following distance between your car and the vehicle in front

Meanwhile in our region, the National Weather Service reports the heaviest snow will remain confined to areas along and southeast of a line from Watseka in Illinois, northeast to Valparaiso, before exiting off to the east by early this evening. Strong north to northeast winds, with gust of 30 miles per hour is also expected, and snow accumulations of around one inch expected.
